The term "weblog" was coined by Jorn Barger in December 1997.

"Weblogs are often-updated sites that point to articles elsewhere on the web, often with comments, and to on-site articles. A weblog is kind of a continual tour, with a human guide [whom] you get to know. There are many guides to choose from and each develops an audience. There's camaraderie and politics between the people who run weblogs. They point to each other in all kinds of structures, graphs, loops, etc." -- Dave Winer, History Of Weblogs

The shorter version, "blog," was coined by Peter Merholz who in April or May of 1999 broke the word "weblog" into the phrase "we blog" in the sidebar of his weblog. Thus the word "blog" became a verb and a culture all it's own.

Looking at the BlogTower logs, I see many people finding us from Google, Yahoo, and other search engines.  I like to look at what they searched for, why they were coming to my site.

They come, read.  Maybe even come back again later.  Bookmark?

But every now and then, someone leaves a comment on one of the articles and I think, "Wow, someone came and read my stuff, and actually cared what I said enough to make a comment."  That's a pretty cool feeling.  I like that someone read my drivvel and posted a comment.  Do it again!

But that's the thing about blogs.  They are a place to pour out your soul, ideas, sheer trash, junk, blabbing, chatter, and anything else.  You can make a blog that raises eyebrows or that totally alienates the entire world.  It's a place for people to write down their thoughts.

You can even set up your own BlogTower blog for no comments, for only certain comments, or even that no one else but you can even read.  That way, you can put private stuff that only you and whoever you want to have access can read it and reply or you can lock out comments at all, or on a single article.  This thing rocks!

The best blogs are those written like no one is going to read them, and then discussed in the comments by the visitors.  Now that is some interesting reading.

So, feel free to comment all you want.  Enjoy yourself.  (But remember, I have this little 'X' here if you get out of line.)  If you enjoy commenting, might want to think about getting one of your own blogs.  It's easy.  And it's definantely fun!
